Non-Professional YouTube Makeup Lovers
So I am reading this professional makeup artist's blog. I get excited to do so because I love learning from anyone. I learned at an early age you can learn from anyone so always be willing to absorb knowledge. No certification can teach you everything there is to know about a subject. I quickly became put off by what this person wrote. It was oozing arrogance. Yes, you are a professional and congratulations for that. But does that make it okay for you to hate on everyone else's videos. Let me explain.
She wanted everyone on youtube who does makeup videos to do makeup her way. She wanted scripts, editing, a professional setting, no background noise, no children, no husband, perfectly painted rooms. I agree, a messy room is not ideal to do a video in. However, being a snob about someone else's videos who you are not forced to watch is ridiculous. And as a film graduate it was insulting to me. My friends and I have spent good money on software, study, and equipment to expect everyone to be able to do what we do at our label. But none of us would ever think to say don't do a youtube video because you are not a filmmaker. That's ridiculous. So I do not understand her reasoning. I would never ask someone to spend their money so they can make a prettier youtube video. It was a little offensive. She was essentially saying anyone can make a professional video. As much as I love makeup, anyone can do it. The makeup industry is built on the idea that anyone can do it. What makes it art is the ability to originate looks, to think differently about color, to inspire and uplift wearers. That's what makes a professional makeup artist to me. Otherwise you are a makeup applier.
She then said people were giving the wrong information and teaching people how to do makeup wrong. Um, people are requesting these looks. Obviously, they think the looks are pretty. I've seen looks I do not like. That does not mean they are doing it wrong. It's different from my style.
The worst thing a professional can do is downplay the accomplishments of those who are not. It makes her look bad. She was saying "where is your dignity, where is your model?"
I suppose she doesn't understand the spirit of youtube. It is about people who don't know each other bonding over a common passion. When we have to start paying the YouTuber for our subscriptions and they make enough to make dvd quality videos I can see her ideas making sense.
I of course had to leave a comment.
Tell me ladies and gentlemen what is your opinion on this matter. I would love to hear from anyone who makes videos. Please tell me if you are a professional artist and what you think makes a good tutorial video.
Please remember no matter how high up you get in your career, no matter what industry, or how high you are in life, you can always learn from someone, anyone so keep your mind open. Not to is doing yourself a grave disservice.
Love ya,
SJ

I understand your point of view. But most people are not professional makeup artists nor are they filmmakers. I am a script writer and filmmaker and all this software costs thousands of dollars. This is not to mention the time it takes. The people are not getting paid. The people do not refer to themselves as gurus. That seems to be a term people use negatively to dismiss what knowledge the people do have. Often others are requesting a look because they feel they can learn from them. The people are approachable. This is the first step in being a great teacher. It's not about lighting or scripts. If someone were to pay me or my many filmmaker friends to do what we do few youtube videos would exist. Youtube is more about people connecting with people who share a similar passion. The makeup industry is recognizing this. As a marketing student I can tell you it's important to realize the changes in communication and education. I watch professionals as well as those who are not for different reasons and I learn from everyone. I've been doing makeup for a while and like any art my style is going to be different someone else's. That's what it art. You can learn from anyone if you have an open mind.

the artist you are referencing should just let her vids shine because of how 'spectacular' they are and sit down some where!
